Q: I have always wanted to move to Massachusetts, or Connecticut... somewhere up there but i don't know about the snow... i think i would be okay with the cold but is it a lot of work to live in the snow... like putting chains on your tires or shoveling the driveway... is it really that bad?? Do you like living in the snow? What do you have to do? worry about? things like that... But why does it suck?? I want to know if it is something I could do...

A: I don't live in the East, and I imagine in the big cities out there the heat of the large population and traffic helps most of it to turn to slush or melt quicker than it does here... in urban areas at least. in Michigan, we get a lot of snow due to the lake effect, I have lived here my entire life and no one in my family has ever put chains on their tires. A lot farther up north, in the Michigan UP where they have a few feet of snow year round that is more likely. Shoveling your driveway is a chore similar to mowing the lawn. And you can buy snowblowers that do it very quickly and with less effort on your part. Or put a plow on your truck and do it in a few swoops. That is probably only if you are out in a more rural area though. I love the snow. Winter time makes me feel alive, the smells, the sounds, the tastes and looking at all the trees and other things in nature that live through it waiting for spring. All you need to worry about is the ice on the roads, that can be tricky. Just walk carefully when you get out to go to the store, and dont drive like a moron. sometimes its there and you cant see it (black ice) dont use cruise control and pay attention going over bridges, Dont drive too slow, that often causes more accidents than fast. People who think they have 4 x 4 and are invincible end up getting in one car accidents because they are idiots. slow drivers cause pile ups. Just dont freak out, drive calmly and safely. and the days that its icy enough to worry about that are few throughout the winter. lots of heavy snow has caved in some peoples roofs in the history of time, but its not common. Just keep an ice scraper and brush in your car. Keep blankets or carharts in the car in the winter in case you break down somewhere. wear a hat and gloves and boots in the winter but they arent needed everyday. if you just want cold move to minneapolis, if you want snow Michigan and New York get a bit. and dont be afraid of it. its wonderful.
